HMS is the graduate medical school of Harvard University. It is not located on the main campus in Cambridge, though. You’ll find the school located in the Longwood area of Mission Hill in Boston. The school confers M.D., PhD, and joint degrees.
This school happens to be the oldest medical school in the United States and was founded by Dr. John Warren in September of 1782. The first class consisted of just two students who graduated in 1788. The program relocated from Cambridge to Boston in 1810. The school features three flagship hospitals, including Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital. It is also affiliated with many more health care organizations around the region, and around the world.
Once students matriculate to HMS, they are divided into five different societies all named after famous alumni. Each of the five societies has a headmaster who advises and organizes educational and extracurricular events for the students.
